We interviewed Sanjeev Dutta, a strategic business leader with over 30 years of experience spanning commodities, financial services, sustainability, and bilateral trade. As the former CEO of the UAE-India Business Council (UIBC) and Executive Director at the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), Sanjeev has been instrumental in building ecosystems that have strengthened economic ties between the UAE and India and positioned Dubai as a global trade hub.

In this conversation, Sanjeev shares his perspective on the opportunities, challenges, and transformative potential of the organic and wellness sectors between the UAE and India, and how platforms like the Organic & Natural Products Expo can foster meaningful connections.

How does the UAE-India Business Council support bilateral trade in organic and wellness sectors?

As with any organised and recognised trade body, the UAE-India Business Council supports not only the segments directly represented by its distinguished members but also the wider ecosystem. The organic and wellness industry carries significant weight as an area of focus because it aligns with the broader global shift toward sustainability and healthier living.

The Council provides a platform to bring together suppliers, buyers, investors, and regulators from both countries to engage and collaborate. It ensures that conversations go beyond transactional trade to also focus on creating long-term value and building sustainable supply chains between India and the UAE.

What cross-border opportunities exist for natural product suppliers between the two markets?

There are significant opportunities rooted in the symbiotic advantages of the two markets. India, with its large manufacturing base, biodiversity, and heritage of natural wellness, is well-positioned to supply the growing demand for organic and natural products.

Dubai and the UAE serve as a global gateway. Beyond meeting regional demand, the UAE enables suppliers to access markets in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and beyond thanks to its infrastructure, trade policies, and connectivity. This complementary relationship allows businesses to scale their reach and build a truly international presence.

What are the biggest sourcing or policy challenges suppliers should be aware of?

One of the main challenges is ensuring compliance with international standards. Often, products manufactured under Indian national standards do not fully align with international or UAE-specific regulations, especially when it comes to organic certification, clean-label claims, and documentation.

It is also crucial for suppliers to maintain consistent quality, adhere to testing requirements, and stay updated on evolving regulatory expectations. Addressing these gaps is key to establishing credibility and succeeding in the UAE and other global markets.

EventHow do you see the Expo helping foster new business partnerships?

The Expo can absolutely act as an effective conduit for building new partnerships. Events like the Organic & Natural Products Expo create a space for businesses to showcase their capabilities, understand the needs of the market, and establish trust with potential partners.

It provides an excellent starting point for companies to engage in meaningful discussions, pitch their products and services, and raise awareness of what they bring to the table in the regional and global context.

What kind of companies or innovations are you personally hoping to connect with?

I am interested in connecting with companies across the entire industry ecosystem. This includes suppliers of organic and natural products, businesses developing sustainable or innovative packaging solutions, and those offering technologies that can enhance supply chain efficiency and sustainability.

The focus is on engaging with organisations that are committed to quality, sustainability, and continuous improvement while contributing to the development of the organic and wellness sectors.

Sanjeev Dutta’s insights highlight the depth of opportunity for collaboration between India and the UAE in the organic and wellness sectors. By combining India’s production capabilities and heritage with the UAE’s global trade position, businesses can build robust, sustainable partnerships that benefit both economies.

His experience underscores the importance of aligning with international standards, maintaining consistency, and using platforms like the Organic & Natural Products Expo to foster connections and growth.
